One of our most popular clubs, the Thursday after school sessions are great for those looking for an all round introduction to the exciting world of art.
Working with artist, Kirsten Norbury, this club is designed to encourage a passion for art as well as preparing children looking to choose art as an GCSE subject.
Over the course of the five weeks, children will learn about many different facets of art as they seek inspiration from some of the greats.
During our first week, we’ll take inspiration from the wonderful abstract artist, Ben Nicholson, as we explore colour and composition.
We begin with looking at how the colour of a shape can change the visual weight of a subject and we’ll discuss different colours and combinations and the different effects that they have on an object.
During our second week, we continue with the theme of colour and composition, examining the subject in more depth as we create compositions of shape, line and colour.
It’s time to get messy as we experiment with painting on plaster as used to fantastic effect by Van Gogh. We’ll begin by creating our own ‘canvas’ from plaster and we’ll explore still life by choosing an object and examining it closely using a viewfinder. We’ll then paint on our canvas with oil pastel, linseed oil and graphite to create a unique piece of art. This important project is designed to encourage an open-ended exploration of painting.
Brings us to our modelling session - one of our favourite parts of the course. From visuals supplied, we’ll study the form of a polar bear and discuss position, form and shape. We’ll then use paper, cling film and mod roc to create our very own polar bear model. This is a great exercise in hand eye co-ordination as well as being great fun.
In our final week, we’ll be working on self-portraits using drypoint etching. Children will learn to study their own image and identify characteristics in order to plan their self-portrait. We’ll then created the portraits using good water based printing ink, sheets of acrylic and a tabletop press.
For the budding Banksy or the Tobey in training, this course is a comprehensive and fun way to become acquainted with the different disciplines and techniques of the art world.
On this course children will learn about:-
- Colour and composition
- Planning and design
- Abstract art
- The art of the self-portrait
